CALM is a risk management training protocol designed to help organizations and school campuses develop training, policy and procedures in assessing, preventing and intervening crisis and violent critical incidents. The CALM training protocol involves working with upper management in developing comprehensive plan to address some of the most severe incidents schools and organizations face. Staff will receive training and certification in three nationally recognized and industry-leading organizations in dealing with violent critical incidents also known as active shooter incidents (ALICE), school fighting (CPI), and First Aid and CPR (American Red Cross), as well as training in risk assessment, situational awareness, restorative justice and a comprehensive method that compliments each area and put it all together. Prior to Training One we will meet with Leadership and conduct a site assessment and determine the needs of the facility, organization and school. Trainings Two through Four implement a blended learning model of computer-based and classroom instruction to maximize time. The average video portion is about two hours long and the average classroom portion is about three hours long. The video portion of each training will be sent to staff to complete at their own pace anywhere from one-three weeks before the relative classroom portion is conducted, depending on timetables. Training Five involves using the CALM Method to put all of the other training together to develop a Shared Mental Model and Standard of Operations for the entire organization to follow. We will work with upper management to develop an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), an Emergency Management Team (EMT), work with law enforcement, fire department and local community organizations to establish the community partnerships needed to increase safety, security, and survivability. This is a school/organization/ community-wide approach to protecting our students and staff should the need arises.
